02 November 2017
Pat Rafferty hails Unite’s Scottish Policy Conference as a huge tribute to the union’s resolve, unity and diversity.
Unite’s second policy conference was held at the end of October in the Highland resort of Aviemore. More than 200 hundred lay delegates attended over 28th and 29th October.
A wide range of policy resolutions were moved, seconded and debated with great enthusiasm, emotion and elan. The agenda gave an indication of the great sweep of Unite’s standing in every area of the Scottish economy and beyond that the union’s presence in Scottish society as a whole.
Pat Rafferty said: “Unite is a union that speaks from the heart, that speaks with passion, and with real determination. The diversity of the speakers from the conference podium spoke volumes - men, women, the young, and those long in the tooth in the union, international delegates – and the enthusiasm for the struggle was so evident.”
The resolutions carried covered apprenticeships, the North Sea, transport, local government, the NHS, to name only a few, as well as the more general issues like clean air, mental health, and homelessness.
There were three films shown during the conference each of which was a testament to the theme of Conference – Unite Winning for You.
Pat Rafferty said “It’s the members who make Unite. People make Unite. Now we have decided on what is to be done. And we need to deliver on that by the time of the next Policy Conference in two years time. So 2018 must be the year of building Unite in Scotland. Unite winning for you can only become a bigger and bigger reality by building the union.”
