The latest average earning figures reveal that UK workers are becoming poorer as wages are only rising by 5.8 per cent, less than half the real rate of inflation (RPI), which is currently 13.5 per cent.

The figures further highlight how it is excessive profiteering and greedflation that are driving inflation rather than pay increases.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “The latest earning figures will send a shiver down the spine of workers throughout the UK. Despite their hard work and dedication they are getting poorer in real terms.

“The facts speak for themselves – it is clearly not wages that are driving inflation but unfettered corporate profiteering. The government has been missing in action for over a year in its failure to tackle corporate greed. This abject failure is causing misery to millions who simply can’t make ends meet.”
