SOS Steel Emergency as future of town’s steelworks at ‘five to midnight’
On Monday 26 June, Unite will unveil billboards and digital advertisement vans in Scunthorpe as part of SOS Steel Emergency campaign to save the towns’ embattled steelworks. Local steel workers will be there and can be interviewed (photos and video will be available on request).
When: 1600 hrs Monday 26 June 2023
Where: Scunthorpe Steel Works, Gate D, Brigg Rd, Scunthorpe, DN16 1XA
Unite’s SOS Steel Emergency campaign will bring the community together to demand government acts to:
-
Cut crippling energy costs that are twice as high as competitor steel nations
-
Invest in green technology to support and save UK steel jobs
-
Demand that UK-made steel is used in all UK public sector projects.
Following the unveiling of the billboards and digital advertisements vans, Unite steelworker members will travel to London on Wednesday 28 June to deliver their message to Westminster in a protest outside Parliament.
Unite national officer Linda McCulloch said: “The workers will tell MPs it should be unthinkable that the UK could be the only G7 nation without the capacity to produce its own steel. But the government’s lack of action is putting the entire industry in peril. The clock’s at five to midnight”.
