Members of Unite, Britain and Ireland’s largest union, employed at Peter Bedford Housing Association in Hackney are set to take five working days of strike action in a dispute over broken pay promises.

The 25 Unite members, who provide care and assistance to 400 vulnerable adults in supported living accommodation, will take strike action beginning on Monday 3 December and ending on Friday 7 December.

Management's broken pay promise

The dispute is a result of the management of the housing association failing to implement a pay deal agreed last year. A deal had been brokered by Unite agreeing that the workforce would be paid in line with the National Joint Council (local government agreement) pay rates and that the housing association would also honour future local government pay increases.

Pay rates for workers in local government increased by two per cent this April but the management at Peter Bedford failed to increase workers’ pay accordingly. This was despite the housing association recording a surplus last year.

Up until the agreement made last year, the workforce has not received a pay increase for five years.

Last resort

Unite regional officer Adam Lambert said: “Our members are taking strike action as an absolute last resort.

“The work they do is of profound importance to the residents that they assist on a daily basis, and all they ask is that agreements regarding their pay are honoured.

“This strike is entirely of the management at Peter Bedford’s making.

“If the management of Peter Bedford is serious about avoiding strike action then it has to implement the promised pay increase and back date it from April.

“Other employers should note that Unite will take robust action where union agreements are breached.”
