Local councillor's, please add your name to our letter, calling for decent pay for council workers.

We the undersigned call for a decent and fair pay rise for all workers delivering local authority services.

Local government and school staff are working above and beyond the call of duty, dedicating themselves to their jobs, and they are not shying away from the daily risk the coronavirus presents. They are dedicated to keep public services working and our country on track.

It is our front line local authority workers who are protecting our communities and vital services, caring for our young and our vulnerable elderly, collecting our rubbish, cleaning our streets, and working in our crematoria to ensure dignity for those who have, sadly, fallen victim to this terrible virus.

Yet these same workers continue to be some of the lowest paid in the economy and many have seen their pay drop in real terms by over 22% following 10 years of austerity and cuts. The same workers who have carried on despite a lack of PPE and in many cases inadequate social distancing.

We believe the current offer to staff is inadequate and that the deliberate misunderstanding of the annual leave section of the joint union claim is insulting to our staff. The lowest paid are being asked to accept a pay rise of little more than £1.83 per day. This is unacceptable and more needs to be offered so that local authority workers receive the dignity and fairness they deserve.
