ETF WORKING TIME CAMPAIGN - UPDATE

Please see below an overview of the actions and activities organised by the section members as part of the ETF campaign on working time for drivers:

LORRY CONVOYUnite ETF Lorry

London, Friday 23 April - This morning the first lorry part of the ETF convoy has departed from London . UNITE and ITF launched the action. The lorry will join other 14 lorries and coaches on Sunday in the Netherlands . The convoy will cross the Netherlands , Germany , Luxembourg , France and will arrive in Brussels on Wednesday, 28 April.

The convoy / The convoy will include 10 lorries and one FNV bus. Additional vehicles will accompany the convoy (ACV & BTB from Belgium ). The following unions will participate in the convoy: ACV Transcom (Belgium), BTB (Belgium), CFDT (France), CFTC (France), FO (France), FNV (the Netherlands), OGBL (Luxembourg) UNITE (UK), Ver.di (Germany), VIDA (Austria). The convoy will start on Monday 26 April and will finish its journey on Wednesday 28 April. It will stop in: The Hague (the Netherlands ), Düsseldorf ( Germany ), Schengen ( Luxembourg ), Paris ( France ) and Brussels ( Belgium ). Other trade unions and section members from the respective countries will welcome the convoy at its arrival in the above mentioned cities, with large numbers of trade union activists.

In Brussels, Wednesday 28 April / The lorry convoy will circle the European Institutions between 10:00 and 11:00. About 200 trade union activists will gather together at Schumann (in front of the European Commission building) and will march towards the Parc du Cinquantenaire (2 km). ITF and ETF General Secretaries will be present. An ETF delegation will be present in the European Parliament, at the vote (11:00). The ETF asked already for a meeting with the DG MOVE Commissioner and Director General, Wednesday afternoon.

OTHER COUNTRIES ACTIONS

bulgaria flag Bulgaria / FFTUB gave the start for the new wave of the ETF campaign on working time for drivers, at the beginning of February. FTTUB run a one-week campaign public targeting, organising meetings on road safety in schools, distributing leaflets in public places, meeting government representatives. FTW Podkrepa had meetings with Bulgarian MEPs, including MEPs from the EPP group and organised meetings with their members to inform them about the problems related to the revision of the working time for drivers.
Swiss flag Switzerland / on 16 March 2010, just before the debate in the European Parliament on the working time for drivers, the Swiss trade unions organised a demonstration in Bern in front of the Swiss Parliament and the EU Mission to Bern.
German Flag Germany / During the periodFebruary – April Ver.di had several meetings, both in Belgium - Brussels and in Germany , with MEPs from the conservative and liberal political groups. To our surprise, the German EPP (EP conservative group) delegation is now receptive to the trade union arguments.  
french flag

France / Mach – April / CGT has actively lobbied MEPs from most of the political groups. The French MEPs will vote in support for the inclusion of the self-employed drivers within the working time rules.

Austria flag

Austria / April / VIDA, together with two NOG-s and the Chamber of Labour lobbied the Austrian MEPs and the government; at the end of last week, a joint press release was issued by VIDA and the Chamber of Commerce (employers’ organisation), stressing on the importance of same rules for all drivers. The Austrian Ministry of Transport issued a press release in favour of the inclusion of self-employed drivers in the working time rules. The Austrian Ministry of Labour sent this position to the Spanish Presidency.

italian flag Italy/ TheETF Executive Committee members from Italy have formally approached the Italian MEPs from all political groups with the demand to include the self-employed drivers within the scope of the working time directive. Italian MEPs from the EPP (conservative group of the European Parliament) have tabled amendments for the inclusion of SED within the working time rules.
greek flag Greece / TheETF Executive Committee members from Greece have formally approached the Greek MEPs from all political groups with the demand to include the self-employed drivers within the scope of the working time directive. Greek MEPs from the EPP (conservative group of the European Parliament) have also tabled amendments for the inclusion of SED within the working time rules!
Spainish flag  Spain / on 3 March 2010 CC.OO met the Spanish Presidency. The ETF was represented by the Road Transport Section President Roberto Parrillo. The unions and the employers organisations from Spain forwarded to MEPs and the Presidency a joint letter on the inclusion of self-employed drivers in the scope of the directive.

ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION ORGANISED BY THE AUSTRIAN CHAMBER OF LABOUR / BRUSSELS , 26 April

On 26 April 2010 at 19:00 the Austrian Chamber of Labour will organise in Brussels a round table discussion on working time for road transport. Eduardo will represent the ETF. MEP Edith Bauer (rapporteur) will be there, along with an IRU representative, and with Stephen Hughes (MEP socialist group, shadow rapporteur on this dossier).
