Welcome to the PMA
The Probation Managers' Association was formed in 1980 and
provides professional support and advice for members who hold
management posts within the National Probation Service. Since its
formation the Association has grown in size, organisation and
influence, establishing close links with the National Probation
Directorate, the Home Office and the Probation Boards' Association.
The PMA's views are regularly sought throughout the Criminal
Justice System and we are represented on a number of influential
bodies.
The PMA is a member of the Federation of Professional
Associations (FPA) of Unite enabling us to draw heavily upon the
expertise and resources of one of the largest unions in the UK. Our
NEC meets at regular intervals throughout the year, maintaining
contact with the membership via a network of Centres and Regional
Representatives. The Probation Manager is published on line up to
four times a year and we organise a biannual training
conference.
The PMA affirms the central role of the National Probation
Service within the Criminal Justice System and promotes the crucial
role of management grades in effectively managing service delivery,
innovation and change. Alongside this, however, the Association is
also concerned to ensure that the management skills of its members
are appropriately recognised, developed and protected in the often
hostile workplace environment which demands constantly high
standards of performance from finite resources.
