Intercollegiate framework -
Safeguarding Children and Young people: roles and competences for
health care staff
All health staff must have the competences to
recognise child maltreatment and to take effective action as
appropriate to their role. They must also clearly understand their
responsibilities, and should be supported by their employing
organisation to fulfil their duties.
In 2006 the Royal Colleges and professional
bodies jointly published Safeguarding children and young
people: roles and competences for health care staff. The
document described six levels of competences and provided model
role descriptions for named and designated professionals.
Reviews across the UK reinforced the need to
further improve the safeguarding skills and understanding of health
staff. In response to these issues and to recent policy
developments, the Royal Colleges and professional bodies have
reviewed and updated the 2006 document.
During the review process an enormous number
of suggestions from across a wide range of professional groups were
received. The framework was refined and the document restructured
in light of comments received.
It is beyond the remit of the framework to
suggest more detail on how training will be
delivered. However we have stressed throughout that it should
whenever possible be appropriate to role. We hope that
innovative training modules which are time efficient and engage
clinicians in multidisciplinary working can be devised to accompany
this infrastructure.
The emphasis within this version is upon the
importance of maximising flexible learning opportunities to acquire
and maintain knowledge and skills, drawing upon lessons from
research, case studies and serious case reviews.
It is likely that the framework will need to be reviewed again
in 2013 in light of the proposed structural changes across the NHS
and other services in England.

Launch of
new web-page for patient/public versions of NICE
guidance
There
is a new page on NICE’s website
- http://www.nice.org.uk/patientsandpublic.
This page allows the user to access all of NICE guidance written
for patients, carers and the public from one dedicated site.
The site gives you the opportunity to search for the
patient/public versions of our guidance by keyword, by health care
topic, or by date. In addition, by clicking ‘show all’ you
can access all of the clinical ‘understanding NICE guidance’
documents and all of the public health quick reference
guides. The page also gives the user the option to see other
versions of the guidance if they wish, and links back to
information on how patients, carers and members of the public can
get involved with NICE’s work.
CWDC has
launched a microsite for Integrated Working
http://www.cwdcouncil.org.uk/alltogetherbetter
The new site explains the principles of Integrated Working and
provides a range of FREE tools and guidance, including:
- Common assessment framework - a process that enables
practitioners and volunteers to identify each child's needs, and
who is best placed to deliver support and develop a tailored action
plan to meet those needs.
- Guidance for the lead professional / practitioner - the person
who co-ordinates all activity and becomes a single point of contact
for everyone involved, especially the child or young person.
- Guidance on information sharing - practical advice and guidance
on appropriate ways to share information.
- Induction Workbook and training materials to introduce
practitioners and volunteers to integrated working.

We need
your help to return the Health Visiting profession to
statute!
Unite/CPHVA and many experts are convinced that taking health
visitors out of statute in 2001 has had a significant effect in
reducing investment in the profession. Add your voice to the
campaign to return Health Visiting to statute and safeguard the
future of the profession by clicking here - Unite-CPHVA
