My employer has a policy of
compulsory retirement at 65 years old. Can I work in the NHS after
this?
Answer - The
regulations about compulsory
redundancy due to age are the same across all employers, not

CPHVA Membership
As a student Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN),
how do I ensure I will pay the correct subscription rate?
Answer - SCPHN students are required to
pay £46.00 for their membership. This is a one-off Direct Debit
payment that will give you union cover for a period of 15
months.
A student CPHVA membership also includes a monthly subscription
to the Community Practitioner Magazine.
Magazine.
In order to access the correct rate when you join online, please
ensure that you enter the “Recruitment Code” CPHVAS when
prompted.
Please note that the student membership does
not provide you with professional indemnity
insurance. Those students who are salaried and working in the
community are required to join as a full CPHVA member in order to
receive our £3 million indemnity cover.
Further information regarding the CPHVA section can be found in
the other FAQs in this section

What do I do if I need to contact the Unite/CPHVA for help?
Answer - If you are an Unite/CPHVA member and have a
membership query and/or an employment matter that you need help
with, this is what you should do.
In the first instance, you should contact your workplace
representative - LAR (Local Accredited Representative). If you
don't know who your LAR is or your trust doesn't have one, you
should contact your nearest regional office.
There are 12 of them throughout the UK. Detailed
information on your region is available from the section
on Regions on the main Unite
site.

Professional Liability Cover
I would
like to find more information on professional liability insurance
cover offered by the Unite/CPHVA.
Answer - We have had several queries about professional
liability cover recently.
The information is given below.
Your liability for £3million is not usually affected when you
change jobs. Important information to note is that you must:
1) Be qualified to do the work in question, and where necessary be
assessed for competency
2) Be working within your scope of
practice
3) Follow the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
4) Be an employee (not self employed), and your employer
acknowledges that that the work is part of your role as a
practitioner, and is within your scope of professional
practice.
5) You can however do some voluntary work; see the policy for
details
6) You are covered for nurse prescribing as long as you have passed
the course (which covers the items you prescribe)

Unite/CPHVA Professional Levy
What is the professional Levy?
Answer - This is an additional fee Unite/CPHVA members pay
on top of the normal Unite membership subscription. The levy
is under the direct control of the Director who is accountable to
the Unite/CPHVA Executive Committee for its use. The levy enables
Unite/CPHVA to provide additional professional services to its
members which would not otherwise be available. This
includes dedicated professional officer time for Scotland,
Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as for school nursing,
clinical effectiveness, and strategic work on NHS policy.
