1930s Daily Sketch trade union leader dies

10 June 2009

Bill Abbott, well-respected former official of print union NATSOPA, has died aged 97. He worked in various capacities in national newspaper offices, and in 1937 led the first strike by office worker trade unionists in Fleet Street when office staff at the Daily Sketch stopped work for 48 hours in solidarity action with the NUJ.

Bill went on to represent admin worker members of NATSOPA at all levels in the union, retiring in 1977 from his final role in the union as full-time Assistant Branch Secretary of the 12,000-member LCA&EP Branch.

He was held in high regard by trade union colleagues and members, using his experience to great effect in support of workers during many negotiations and disputes organized by clerical workers in pursuit of better pay and conditions in newspapers, magazine and book publishing.
