Community, youth workers and not for profit sub-sectors
Unite's community, youth workers and not for profit sector
encompasses a broad range of areas. Find out more about Unite's
community, youth workers and not for profit sub-sectors.
Housing associations
Unite represents thousands of members working in general and
supported housing. Whilst each housing association creates an
agenda of its own, we also campaign on issues that impact across
the sector. Find our more about Unite and Housing associations.
Arts organisations
Unite has many members working for arts infrastructure bodies,
like the Arts Council, as well as front line arts
organisations.
The arts have faced many challenges at this time of economic
downturn, as resources have been re-allocated elsewhere. Unite has
therefore been working to save jobs and to support members through
redeployment.
Unite has been working closely with the Arts Skills Council –
Creative and Cultural Skills to maximise learning opportunities for
members.
Trade unions
If you work for a trade union, it is also importance to belong
to a union, as with any other employer. Unite has a strong
membership of trade union staff and officers and works closely with
their employers to ensure that their interests are best
represented.
Children’s charities
Unite members in children’s charities spreads across many of the
largest organisations in the sector, as well as lots of niche
service providers. Unite Children’s Charities members have worked
together across organisations for many years, to strengthen their
work on key issues from safety and learning through to funding and
pensions.
The annual Unite Children’s Charity seminar has provided a good
space for representatives to share all that is going on in the
sector and ensured that we have a campaign plan for the sector.
Professional Bodies, APTG, NUPIT
Unite represents members working for professional bodies and
councils as well as groups of professional workers, like those that
belong to the
Association of Professional Tourist Guides (APTG) and the
National Union of Professional Interpreters and Translators
(NUPIT).
APTG is campaigning for statutory regulation to protect the
profession as well as the public in the work that they do. NUPIT is
similarly campaigning for recognition of the profession due to the
undermining of terms and conditions resulting from the outsourcing
of public services interpreting.
Youth organisations
Professional Youth and Children’s Workers are organised in the
Community and Youth Section of Unite.
Play organisations
The profession of play workers has recently been recognised, and
Unite is campaigning to ensure that they have nationally negotiated
terms and conditions as well as a high professional standing.
Community organisations
Community Workers work for not for profit organisations as well
as local authorities. Often lone workers, there are many issues
around personal safety, not to mention terms and conditions and
pay.
Advice, guidance and legal bodies
From CABs to law centres, Unite has a strong membership. As a
union, Unite has been working hard to ensure that the funding
mechanisms are changed to best resource legal advice and acts of
assistance, as well as ensuring that service users get the optimal
service necessary to resolve their issues.
Faith organisations
Unite organises across faith bodies, faith-related charities and
ministers of religion. Unite has a strong and growing membership in
this area. Find out more on Unite and faith organisations.
International aid organisations
All the major international aid organisations are organised by
Unite, however Unite also has an increasing number of smaller and
more specialist organisations wanting to join the union too.
Funding is a major issue in this sector, particularly at this
time of recession. Unite is therefore working to safeguard the jobs
of members as well as protect jobs from being outsourced
overseas.
Campaigning organisations
There is a wide breadth and depth to the range of organisations
that Unite organises across the area of campaigning. Unite works
very closely with these organisations.
Animal welfare organisations
The RSPCA is the largest animal welfare charity that Unite is
recognised in, although there are many small organisations too.
Unite represents its members on issues like pensions, pay, terms
and conditions in this sector.
Environmental organisations
With government policy focused on issue related to the
environment, Unite has developed a strong presence in representing
staff in these organisations.
Social, welfare, care, mental health
organisations
Public policy has argued that the third sector should play a
major role in the delivery of public services, and while Unite is
recognised in many organisations that have organically developed in
the sector, Unite has noticed an increase in the number of workers
who have been transferred from the public sector.
TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings and the Protection of Employment)
legislation plays a major role in safeguarding members terms and
conditions of employment. As a union Unite ensures that the
organisations apply this legislation properly.
The Independent Safeguarding Authority is presenting many issues
for the sector, not least the fact that people have to register to
work with vulnerable adults and children. Perhaps more worrying are
the proposals for the ISA which has no process of appeal for those
that are struck off for what is seen to breach the code set out by
the ISA.
Disability organisations
Many organisations work in the field of disability and Unite has
a strong membership in many of these areas. This is a area of
growth for Unite, and we would really welcome opportunities to work
with new organisations in the sector to improve the terms and
conditions of the workforce, often lowly paid.
Health and science organisations
Unite is focused on growing its membership in health and science
organisations. Unite negotiates on issues like pay, terms and
conditions for members working in these organisations.
Funding agencies
Whilst funding is a major issue that Unite campaigns around,
funding bodies also create an agenda of their own employees. Unite
is at the forefront of protecting members in this area.
Umbrella and infrastructure bodies
Many of the organisations in the sector are affiliated to
infrastructure bodies. These in turn are frequently organised by
Unite. As with all organisations, issues around funding often
determine jobs, pay and conditions for these bodies.
Non departmental public bodies (NDPBs)
Non departmental public bodies from the Equalities and Human
Rights Commission through to The Big Lottery are organised by
Unite. Unite works closely with employers to further the interests
of members across these organisations.
Education and awarding bodies
Education providers and awarding bodies are organised by Unite.
Each organisation has issues of their own, although in recent times
Unite has campaigned on issues like pensions, work-life balance and
learning for the workforce in these bodies.
NAAFI and Remploy
Organisations like NAAFI and Remploy are not for profit
organisations that receive resourcing from the state, while
expected to develop their own asset base. Unite has a strong
membership in these bodies.
