Your vote on 4 June is important
Why should Unite members vote
Labour
Whilst we recognise the justified anger many
Unite members feel at the unfolding news of Westminster MPs
expenses, we must not forget what these elections are about. Europe
and the European Parliament have been at the heart of delivering
better rights at work, creating jobs, fair access to work and
tackling the threat of the far-right – a better environment for us
all and a fairer society. For Unite members, voting Labour will
make the difference.
The union joint general secretaries Tony
Woodley and Derek Simpson have made it clear to Unite members why
it is important to think of the positive reasons for voting Labour.
Equally they make it clear now is not the time for a protest
vote. These European Parliamentary elections will take place
between the 4th and the 7th of June throughout Europe.

The Tories want to come out of the Social
Chapter putting all the gains we have made on rights at work, paid
holidays and family-friendly rights at risk. We know the Tories
want to ally themselves to the parties of the far-right in the new
European Parliament. That is a strong signal they don’t really have
an interest in what Europe can achieve for ordinary working men and
women.
Why it is important to vote Labour?
- Labour - tackling the recession by investing
and supporting industries and workers while the Tories offer
cuts.
- Labour - supporting social progress in Europe
while the Tories opposed many measures benefiting trade
unionists.
- Labour – taking on the European Court rulings
which have denied UK workers fair access to work in the UK,
especially in engineering construction - click here
for more information
- Labour - taking on discrimination and the
threat of the BNP.
- Labour - ensuring the UK is an integral and
key player in Europe boosting investment and jobs.
So it really is a case of no Labour MEPs, no
progress.
When to vote
These European Parliamentary elections
will take place in the UK on THURSDAY 4 JUNE and across the rest of
Europe between the 4th and the 7th of June.
Unlike the General Election the European
elections are fought on a regional basis using proportional
representation. That means every vote in every area will
count.
If you don’t have a postal vote you should
turn up any time between 7am and 10pm at the polling station your
local authority has notified you of on the polling card they have
sent you. You don’t need your polling card to vote but it
helps.
The European Parliament was duly elected for
the first time in 1979 with elections taking place every five
years.

The UK currently has 78 MEPs. 19 are Labour MEPs (12 of
them belong to the Unite Group of MEPs). We need a strong Labour
Group of MEPs in Brussels to lead and support campaigns which
benefit Unite members. See what all our Labour MEPS have done for
us by clicking here
Their responsibility is to defend your interests! Voting Labour
in your region strengthens their hand in raising UK concerns at
European level.
