Labour candidates back fair access to work

Unite wrote to all the Labour candidates asking them for clear commitments to fair access to work especially for our members in engineering construction.

Those members have been in the spotlight where European contractors and sub-contractors have been winning work in the UK but bringing in their own workers sometimes at lower rates of pay than the nationally negotiated UK agreements. All the union has asked for in these circumstances is that our members who are skilled, ready, willing and able to work are given the right to be considered for those jobs.

So, we asked the Labour candidates to commit to putting pressure on the UK government to implement the European Posted Workers Directive and changes to the European Court of Justice rulings which affect it. By doing this they will create the environment in which that fair access can happen.

All the Labour candidates have made those commitments. It is another reason why Unite members should vote Labour on Thursday 4 June.
