EU campaign: Equal pay between men and women

The gender pay gap is 17.4% across Europe. There has been little progress in reducing it in recent years. In fact, in some Member States the gap is even widening.

The pay gap is linked to a number of complex causes which are frequently interrelated: the undervaluing of women’s work, segregation in the labour market, traditions and stereotypes, and problems in balancing work and private life. The gender pay gap is the consequence of all these factors and inequalities in the labour market.

For these reasons, the Commission is launching a campaign to raise public awareness of the gender pay gap and to explain how it can be tackled.
