How Unite supports EWCs

Unite has played a major role in the setting up of many EWCs across Europe.  In co-operation with the relevant European Indsutry Federations and trade unions across Europe, we work to ensure that EWC agreements and practice comply with the standards set by the EWC Directive, so that employees get the best possible results from them.

As well as helping to set up EWCs, we give ongoing support to current and prospective EWC representatives by providing:
  • advice from a team of experts and researchers via our International Department
  • seminars and training in how to get the best out of EWCs
  • publications
  • access to comprehensive negotiating guidelines
  • links and contact between EWC reps from different companies

If you want to get involved in establishing and operating a European Works Councils, we can help.

If your company has at least 1000 employees in the European Union member states where it operates and 150 in each of at least two of those countries, it is obliged to establish a European Works Council.

If you are not sure whether your company qualifies, ask your regional officer.
