Unite joins demonstration against Honduran coup
1 July 2009
Unite the Union joined other trade unionists and Venezuelan
Solidarity Campaign outside the Honduras embassy yesterday (30
June) to demonstrate against the illegal coup, which has recently
taken place in Honduras.
The coup took place on Sunday 28 June, when
soldiers stormed the presidential residence and captured leftist
Honduran President Manuel Zelaya. He was subsequently flown to
Costa Rica and abandoned.
The coup attempt is a result of the president
wanting to hold a consultative referendum concerning reform to the
Honduras constitution. The referendum is not a binding vote, but
merely an opinion poll to establish whether or not a majority of
Hondurans wished to explore the possibility of modifying their
constitution.
The illegal coup has received international
condemnation including US president Obama and Venezuela President
Hugo Chavez.
Steve Hart Unite regional secretary for the
Eastern region, who attended the demonstration said, “The British
labour movement is horrified at this coup against Honduran
democrats. We pledge solidarity until the democratically elected
president Zelaya is restored”.
Joint Unite General Secretaries Derek Simpson
and Tony Woodley have both signed a statement also condemning the
coup.
The ousted President has vowed to return to
the country this Thursday to reclaim control from the military.
