General election 2010: Make Palestine the issue

The issue of justice for the Palestinians has never been more urgent. 1.5 million Palestinians living in Gaza are now into their fourth year of living under a horrific and brutal siege. And Israel is continuing its illegal settlement building programme throughout the West Bank and East Jerusalem, further entrenching its illegal occupation. It is vital that MPs in the next parliament understand they have a responsibility to act to end Israel’s violations of international law.

Ask your candidiates to show their support by signing up to PSC’s six election pledges: Make Palestine the issue

Lobby your MP/prospective parliamentary candidates

Palestine solidarity campaign logoUnite backs the work of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), which holds an annual lobby in support of Palestinian self-determination every November.

For several years there has been a November lobby of parliament in support of Palestinian self-determination. Hundreds of voters arrange to meet their MPs and impress upon them the popular support for the rights of the Palestinians to their own free nation state.

As a result, many MPs have signed Early Day Motions (EDMs); raised parliamentary questions; written to ministers or joined bodies like the Britain-Palestine all party parliamentary group.

This year the PSC is doing things differently in the light of forthcoming general election - which will take place around May 2010 or before. The protests against the invasion of Gaza in January this year showed how huge numbers of the British public felt about the issue and the PSC wants to take the message to every constituency and make sure it is a feature of the election.

The PSC is calling on supporters to meet with their own MPs in their constituencies, and also to meet with all other candidates to sound them out too. The PSC wants to make sure candidates understand that votes will be influenced by their stance on this important issue.

The main purpose of lobbying is to get your MP to take action. Will they raise a parliamentary question? Will they sign an Early Day Motion (EDM)? Will they write to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office on your behalf?  You could ask for a private meeting with your MP or you could invite him/her to a public meeting.
