Dignity at Work
The Dignity at Work Partnership was set up in 2004 by Amicus the
union (now Unite) to raise awareness of workplace bullying and
harassment, and the damaging effect on employees and
organisational development. The Partnership was jointly
funded by Unite Amicus Section and the Business of Enterprise and
Regulatory Reform (formally the DTI). Other launch partners
included;-
- Connect: the Union for Professionals in Communications
- Legal and General Insurance
- BAe Systems
- the Chemical Industries Association
- Remploy
- Royal Mail
- BT
The Partnership aims were to identify the most effective ways of
dealing with bullying and harassment and encourage employers to
work in partnership with trade unions to adopt best practice in
tackling the problem to adopt a zero tolerance to bullying and
harassment. Organisations were invited to join the
Partnership and to sign a charter expressing a commitment to
pursuing dignity at work values. The Partnership came to an
end in May 2008 having achieved all its objectives.
As a result of the Partnership a large number of organisations
signed up to the charter and over 100 organisations and more than
350 Unite Representatives received training on Dignity at
Work.
A Dignity at Work Action Pack has been produced which gives
information, advice and solutions to trade union reps and employers
on dealing with workplace bullying and harassment. It is
available to download from this website, but also be ordered from
Unite publications. It is a useful tool that trade union reps
can use to work in partnership with employers to promote Dignity at
Work. Additionally, research was carried out on the costs of
workplace bullying and the experiences of Black and Minority Ethnic
workers in respect of dignity at work which are available on the
website and from the Unite publications department.
Although the Partnership has ended, Dignity at Work continues to be
a priority campaign for Unite and if you would like more
information on how to promote Dignity at Work in your organisation
