Free the Miami Five
Vigil: 12th October 2009, 17:30, American
Embassy
Unite and the Free Miami Five Campaign – with the support of
ICTU and SIPTU – are holding a candle-lit vigil outside the
American Embassy at 5.30pm on 12 October 2009 to bring attention to
the re-sentencing hearing scheduled for the Miami Five in a Florida
courtroom on the following day. Find out more on the

Hearts and Minds
Monday 12th October, County Hall, Dublin
The European Anti-Poverty Network Ireland, in association with
the October 17th UN Day for the Eradication of Poverty Campaign,
will hold a lunchtime seminar on Monday October 12th 2009 on
building support in the media and amongst the general public for
tackling poverty, social exclusion and inequality. Find out more,

Irish Congress of Trade Unions
Public Meeting: Recession Ethics - How will the current economic
crisis effect garment workers in the Global South and retail
workers here.

Silvana Cappuccio - “The extreme exploitation of
garment workers in the global south”
Silvana of the International Textile Garment and Leather Workers
Federation (ITGLWF), has travelled to 60 countries in the global
south on behalf of ITGLWF and met thousands of garment workers and
their unions.
Tara Scott and Stacey Doley - “Consumers ethics
and responsibility” Tara and Stacey are known from the BBC
programme “Blood, Sweat and T-shirts” where they experienced a
“short time” as workers in the Indian sweat shops.
John Douglas - “International trade union
solidarity in times of recession.” John is the general
secretary of MANDATE, the third largest union in the Republic of
Ireland with a growing and increasingly active membership base
across the Irish retail and bar trade.

Assembly Point: Garden of Remembrance,
Parnell Square at 1pm
A demonstration is being organised this coming Saturday, 19th
September, by the United Alliance Against Cuts and is being backed
by Unite, branches of SIPTU, People Before Profit and many many
other organisations to show opposition to NAMA.
Additionally, following the Bord Snip report, the government is
planning to impose up to €5 billion worth of brutal cutbacks on
workers, the poor and the most vulnerable in our society.
Please join Unite in the demonstration on Saturday, 19th
September. Bring your family, friends, workmates and neighbours.
The Unite offices at 55/56 Middle Abbey Street will be open from
12.15 to pick up flags and posters.
