Strategy for growth
Unite is in the midst of one of the most important changes
in the history of the union movement. Having recognised that the
decline in Britain and Ireland's union membership and density can
no longer continue, Unite is continuing to fight for worker's
rights and driving the trade union movement back into the
workplace and end the cycle of decline.
The focus - Unite's strategy for growth - is to build a stronger
and larger union by reaching out to millions of unorganised workers
to strengthen the unity and the trade union movement as a
whole.
That's why Unite has established a national organising structure
and organising department to push forward this radical strategy for
growth.
Organising department
Unite's national organising structure built on the organising
department is pushing forward the union's radical strategy for
growth. Organising is the key to the future; it is a focus on
taking trade unionism out to the millions of workers who need
it.
Unite is grasping these new opportunities and is refocusing its
time, money and effort into organising. The work of rebuilding is
about much more than just recruitment. Union organisation depends
on developing a whole new generation of activists and
representatives, able to embed trade unionism and win and grow in
the workplace by getting active again.
Working with and across all Unite regions, the
national organising department is focused on two main aims:
- Strengthening organisation in existing workplaces to win and
grow through the 100% Membership Campaign
- Organising the unorganised on a scale no union has ever
attempted as Unite mobilises to bring trade unionism to all
workplaces throughout Britain and Ireland
The key principles of Unite organising
Organising at Unite is founded on key principles that have
proven to be successful. Organising is not the same as recruitment
- of course it must mean increasing membership, but because that
increases the ability of workers to win for themselves at work.
- Organising by sector
- Rebuilding the shop steward movement by site, by company, by
sector, and globally
- Wins for workers across sectors of the economy
- Build sector combines to bring together activists from across
the industry
- Build sector agreements that seek to eliminate the race to the
bottom on wages, terms and conditions of workers
Organising campaigns
The organising department determines and drives national
organising campaigns in partnership with Unite regions and
trade groups. Unite is mobilising like never before and winning for
members on the ground.
Workers win when they organise!
