Unite welcomes MPs' move to quiz Kraft on how it "misled" UK
9 March 2010
Welcoming the decision of the all-party Business Select
Committee to call Kraft executives before them to give evidence in
public on their conduct during the £12 billion takeover of Cadbury,
Jack Dromey, deputy general secretary of Unite, who will also give
evidence said:
"Parliament is right to call Kraft to account. It was wrong that
a debt-laden American multi-national took over a successful British
company. It was wrong that Kraft misled Cadbury workers and the
public, only to break their promises within seven days.
"Kraft must now give cast-iron guarantees for the future and
Parliament must introduce a Cadbury's Law preventing hostile
takeovers which are neither in the public interest nor in the best
long-term interests of household-name British companies."
Unite is the union for Cadbury's 6000-plus workforce. It
reacted angrily to Kraft's confirmation that it will press ahead
with plans to shut the Somerdale plant in February - made clear by
Kraft only one week after it had taken ownership of Cadbury - with
the loss of 400 jobs. Throughout the bid, Kraft had given
every indication that it saw a future for the plant, despite
Unite's repeated requests not to give false hope to the
workforce. Last week, Kraft also announced plans to cut 150
administration jobs.
