Unite pledges to fight attack by Carmarthenshire county council
19 April 2011
Unite the union has reacted with astonishment and anger today
(Tuesday 19 April) following a vicious attack by Carmarthenshire
county council on the union’s organisation within the
authority.
Carmarthenshire county council is proposing to dramatically cut
Unite’s ability to represent its members by attacking established
procedures for time-off for senior union representatives.
Speaking at the Scottish TUC conference Andy Richards, Welsh
regional secretary of Unite, said: “This vicious attack on our
union by Carmarthenshire county council is a deliberate attempt to
demolish our ability to represent our members. With the cuts to
public services in the pipeline this is a deliberate attempt to
reduce our ability to fight back at a time when our members need us
the most.
“Unite will be forensically examining how Labour councillors
react to these proposals. Any tacit endorsement by them would be
tantamount to a betrayal of the trade union movement.
“We will use all means at our disposal to defend our rights at
Carmarthenshire council including, if necessary, industrial
action.”
