Unite outraged by Royal Mail's 'slash and burn' approach
23 March 2011
Unite has expressed outrage at the "ineptitude" of Royal Mail's
senior management, following a meeting today (Wednesday 23 March)
where Royal Mail revealed its true intentions to slash and burn
management jobs without any regard for the impact on customer
service.
Earlier this week it was suggested that Royal Mail was planning
to cut 1,000 managerial jobs. The company in fact intends to cut up
to 1,229 jobs. The potential redundancies are nationwide and
range from 39 per cent of managers in Northern Ireland to 5.8 per
cent of managers in the North East. These cuts do not include the
losses already announced as part of the mail centre closures in
Newcastle, Darlington, Bradford and Hull.
Ian Tonks, Unite national officer, said: "Royal Mail's
senior management want to slash and burn jobs regardless of the
consequences for customer service or the livelihoods of the staff
who have given years of loyal service.
"Royal Mail seems intent on trying to confuse rather than inform
its staff on the detail of its restructuring. Unite is losing its
patience and we demand the company work constructively with us to
mitigate the effects of the cuts."
