Tories attempt to hijack Unite Valentine’s Day march

6 February 2009

Unite, the UK’s biggest union warn the Uttoxeter Fox’s biscuit faithful not to be hoodwinked by shameful Tory scheming.

On Saturday 14 February workers from Uttoxeter’s Fox’s Biscuit factory will march through the town to show their ‘love’ for their jobs. A Valentine’s themed event will see the Fox’s workforce take to the streets carrying a ‘giant heart cut out’, urging Fox’s bosses to ‘save our jobs’.

Local Uttoxeter Conservative councillors along with sly prospective parliamentary candidate Andrew Griffiths are attempting a shameful hijacking of Unite’s long and seasoned campaign to save Fox’s biscuits in Uttoxeter.

Unite Convenor, Lorna Andrews said: “The Tories have attempted to shamefully take all the credit for the organising of this event. In 18 years of rule the conservatives never showed their workers any ‘love’, especially in fighting to keep peoples jobs.

“Unite officials have worked extremely hard over the months to make sure this campaign is a successful one. Local MP, Janet Dean has worked tirelessly behind the scenes for months along with Unite to keep this campaign going.

“The scheming Tories are attempting to take all the credit for Unite’s hard work on this campaign and we cannot stand for it. It is a cheap shot and Unite members at the plant will not be fooled by Andrew Griffith’s attempt to gain extra coverage and votes.”

800 Unite members working at the Fox’s biscuit factory in Uttoxeter risk losing their jobs if their factory is not chosen as the flagship supersite.
