Gatwick airport porters to strike over zero pay rise
16th December 2009
Airport porters at Gatwick will take strike action on Friday and
Saturday (18th and 19th December) to protest against their
employer’s decision to freeze their pay despite the company making
a 20 per cent increase in operating profits.
Unite members are angry that airport services company Interserve
has given its shareholders a 17 per cent increase in dividends yet
have offered nothing to the company’s porters earning the national
minimum wage.
Ian McCoulough, Unite regional officer, said: “Interserve is
behaving like a scrooge employer. Unite members have been left with
no choice than to take industrial action to get justice on their
pay.”
55 porters are involved in the industrial action, which involves
stopping work for two hours each day. Unite hopes that the action
will bring Interserve back to the negotiating table with a sensible
pay offer. The company last year made £88 million in profit.
