Unite's reaction to the latest unemployment figures
12th May 2009
As unemployment rose across the UK to 2.22 million, Unite, the
UK’s biggest union, is to bring thousands of people from across the
country to march in defence of their jobs this Saturday.
The national March for Jobs on Saturday, May 16th, 2009, through
central Birmingham, will see workers from every sector of the
economy stand together to send a message to the government that
protecting jobs must be the number one priority.
Unite joint general secretary, Tony Woodley, said: "With over
two million unemployed it's clear that not enough is being done to
keep people in work.
"This Saturday thousands of people will be gathering in
Birmingham to demand action to defend jobs.
"It's imperative that the government does everything possible to
keep our vital industries alive. It makes more sense to keep people
at work than to let them languish on the dole.”
