Unite's reaction to the government's consultation on clean coal

17 June 2009

Welcoming the Government's initiative, Unite national officer, Dougie Rooney said: "We welcome the government's consultation. This is world leading environmental technology and presents the opportunity to create thousands of skilled jobs. The government's proposals must be commercially viable to create the right environment for UK companies like Scottish Power which is investing in clean coal.

"Britain has taken the lead in developing this technology but we need to capitalise on this lead to create an engineering supply chain that can manufacture the necessary components and equipment.

"The export potential is global and reaches out to countries including India and China. The opportunity to create thousands of highly skilled jobs in the UK over the next 5 years cannot be missed, it has to be realised. "

Unite, Britain's biggest union is bringing together some of the major players from the power generation industry and manufacturers of energy components for a conference in London, next Monday, 22nd June. The Rt Hon Lord Mandelson will address the conference. Entitled 'New Energy Brings New Opportunity', the conference will explore the major opportunities for job creation and export potential for the engineering supply chain for clean coal and new nuclear power. The contributors include, Scottish Power, RWE nPower, Rolls Royce, Doosan Babcock and Sheffield Forgemasters.
