Unite's reaction to Bombardier's announcement to cut jobs in Belfast

2 April 2009

Bernie Hamilton, Unite's national officer for aerospace said: "The workers in Belfast are highly skilled. Bombardier needs to do everything possible to retain these workers for when the recession comes to an end.

"We are calling on Bombardier to avoid compulsory job cuts. Any reductions in the workforce should only be achieved through voluntary means. It must look at all options, including bringing work currently outsourced back in-house and embarking on a strategy to win more work for the plant. This difficult period should be used as an opportunity to re-skill and re-train the workforce to prepare for the future. "
