Unite welcomes Glasgow's ‘Living
Wage’
9th March 2009
Unite, Scotland’s largest trade union, welcomed the announcement
from Glasgow city council that it is to pay workers at the local
authority a minimum of £7 an hour in a drive to tackle low pay
across the city.
The £7 rate was announced by Glasgow city council leader Steven
Purcell at the Scottish Labour party conference in Dundee this
weekend. It will come into force on April 1st and it is expected to
boost the wage packets of the local authority’s lowest paid staff
by over £1,000 a year.
Unite senior regional officer, Jimmy Farrelly, said: “We warmly
welcome this progressive development. The new £7 per hour
minimum will improve the lives of many of our members in Glasgow
city council and their families.
“It also vindicates our long held belief that low-pay is a
serious issue across all Scottish local authorities. The
Labour-run council has laid down the gauntlet to other local
authorities across Scotland.
"Unite now urges COSLA and all other Scottish local authorities
to follow Glasgow’s lead and show they are serious about ending the
scourge of poverty pay and inequality in council employment.”
