Unite reaction to Walker Report

26 November 2009

Rob MacGregor, Unite national officer said: “Unite views the Walker proposals as a step in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go before we see the changes in culture and behaviour required in the boardroom of the banks. Simply tinkering on the edges of this industry is totally futile.

“Without radical change we risk seeing a repeat of the chronic mis-management, recklessness and greed which has dominated the banking industry for far too long, and almost brought the country to collapse.

“Staff who work on the front line of the finance industry are calling for the broadening out of corporate governance, to include executives and directors who represent the public interest and employees. Changes to opaque practices in the finance industry are overdue, the sector must be brought into the open to become accountable to all in society.”
