Unite on LDV
5 May 2009
Tony Woodley, Unite joint general secretary said: "We are
delighted at the government's backing for this company.
"At times it has been like pulling teeth trying to secure
the small measure of assistance needed to save this plant but, with
the Prime Minister's intervention, things got moving.
"Months ago we highlighted the potential disaster that
could have forced this company to the wall, taking thousands of
jobs and skills along the way. Since then we've been working
tirelessly to prevent LDV from going under because we believe our
manufacturing jobs are worth fighting for.
"But significant credit must also go to Liam Byrne, the
local MP, who was determined to keep his constituents who worked at
the plant off the dole queue. It is his tenacity, along with our
support, that has given this company a fighting chance of
survival.
"There's a long way to go yet but now thoughts can turn to
building a serious and successful future for this company, and to
getting these men and women, who have not built a vehicle in
months, back to work."
