Unite member receives MBE for services to Health &
Safety
15 June 2009
Unite member and Safety Representative Terri Miller, who works
at De La Rue Security Print in Dunstable, has been awarded a MBE in
the recent honours list for services to Health & Safety in the
Printing Industry.
Terri is very active within her local region and at a national
level and is the vice-chair of the Unite Graphical Paper and Media
Sector National Committee. She has been a safety rep for 14 years
and covers the whole Dunstable site.
On the health and safety front Terri represents Unite on the
national tripartite Printing Industry Advisory Committee (PIAC).
The PIAC advises the Health and Safety Executive board on the
protection of people from health and safety hazards arising within
the printing and publishing industries. The HSE is also responsible
for the protection of the public from related hazards.
Unite Assistant General Secretary, Tony Burke, said: "I am
delighted for Terri. She is an outstanding member of our Union, one
of the unsung heroes who works tirelessly on the behalf of her work
colleagues and her community."
Unite Health & Safety officer, Bud Hudspith, added: "Terri
has made a major contribution to health and safety in her
workplace, and within her company, throughout the union and at a
national level within the printing industry. There is no doubt that
her work has made a considerable difference to safety in her
workplace, and across the industry.
"Her personal contribution to health and safety in the workplace
has been considerable. Over and above her normal employment she has
voluntarily taken on the role of a trade union safety
representative and represented her colleagues at local level. She
has pursued her education as a safety rep through trade union
education and extended that representation to a regional and
national level where her experience and advice on health and safety
has benefited workers and employers throughout the printing
industry."
Terri has completed Trade Union Congress Health and Safety
Courses at Stage 1 and Stage 2. She has also done the TUC 36 week
H&S Certificate course.
