Unite expresses anger at silence over the future of the Bank of
Scotland in Ireland
22nd July 2009
The Unite trade union, which represents 900 of the 1700 staff
working at Bank of Scotland (Ireland), has expressed anger at the
bank's unwillingness to communicate with staff over recent media
speculation about the future of the business.
Unite is demanding that management at the bank move immediately
to clarify the current position with regard to its review of the
bank's operations.
There is huge unease among staff who are hearing rumour after
rumour about the future of the bank operation in Ireland,” said
Unite regional officer Brian Gallagher speaking after a meeting of
staff representatives in Dublin today. “The current
speculation is being allowed to go unchecked. This is very
damaging for staff morale and customer confidence.
“There are stories that the British government, as the major
stakeholder in the bank, has ordered a withdrawal from
Ireland. Properties where hundreds of staff are working have
been listed for rent on property websites and then withdrawn and
there are a raft of other stories being put around.”
“The bank needs to assure staff, customers and the public of its
current intentions so as to bring a sense of order to what is
becoming a very difficult situation.”
