Unite comment on Petroplus’ announcement to close its refinery
function
5th November 2009
Months of uncertainty have now become a real nightmare for 75
workers whose livelihoods are now at stake following
Petroplus’announcement today (Thursday) to shut the refinery
function at its Teesside plant says Unite, the UK’s largest
union.
In January 2009 Petroplus announced that it was having a
strategic review of the Teesside operation. Following that review
it has today announced that it is transferring the refinery
function from Teesside. This will result in 75 redundancies across
the site and leave approx 80 staff to run the terminal.
Bob Bolam, Unite regional officer, said: "This announcement
brings an end to ten months of uncertainty which has hung over
members’ heads since the review was commissioned earlier this year.
We welcome the fact that is not a full closure and Petroplus will
still have a presence on Teesside. However, we are concerned for
our members whose jobs are at risk and we seek urgent talks with
the company."
Petroplus is part of a multi-national company, which also owns
the Coryton refinery in Essex.
