North Sea tragedy

2 April 2009

Unite the Union’s thoughts are with the families, friends and work colleagues of the crew at this very difficult time. This tragedy brings home to everyone how dangerous the working environment in the offshore industry is. Every support and assistance has to be given to the families to help them cope with this tragedy.

Unite are calling for the grounding of all Super Puma helicopters working in the North Sea until a full investigation can be completed. Unite believes that it is essential that these helicopters are fully checked over, and any actions required following the investigation are complete before they are allowed to return to servicing the North Sea.

As yesterday’s events show working offshore is a hazardous occupation and families have to be reassured that when their loved ones go offshore to work, they are going to return safely. Everyone in the industry:unions, employers, politicians and health & safety bodies have to work together to ensure that a tragedy of this scale should never happen again.
