Linamar workers in Swansea vote for strike action in support of
sacked convenor
28th May 2009
Unite the union is seeking an urgent meeting with Linamar
management after union members voted overwhelmingly to take strike
action in support of the plant’s sacked convenor, Rob Williams.
Union members at the automotive components factory voted by 139
to 19 to take strike action in the secret ballot, on a turnout in
excess of 90 per cent.
Unite joint general secretary Tony Woodley said today: “Linamar
employees have said loud and clear that they are not going to
accept the dismissal of Rob Williams. They understand that this
totally unjustifiable sacking is an attack on the union as a whole
in the factory.
“I am now urgently seeking a meeting with company management to
secure a solution to the crisis it has provoked. I hope that
management will understand the need for a constructive response –
failing that, the union has a clear mandate for strike action to
secure Rob’s reinstatement.”
Linamar Automotive Systems is based in Swansea. Unite believes
that the company's convenor was sacked outside any agreed procedure
and without any charge.
The union is aware that the company is intending to make changes
to its employees terms and conditions in the near future.
