Jaguar job cuts underline urgency of support for the industry
15th July 2009
Commenting on the announcement today that 300 jobs were to go
from Jaguar's Halewood plant, Len McCluskey, assistant general
secretary of Unite, the UK's biggest union, said: "These jobs are
going because production of the baby Jaguar is coming to an end so
it is critical that we get new product into that plant as a
replacement in the immediate future. A new product is pivotal to
the long-term future of the Halewood plant.
"At the same time as announcing these losses, on the basis of
commitments the company has given to the workforce, we expect it to
announce without undue delay the introduction of the LRX and that
production should commence at Halewood.
"These losses also underline the continuing uncertainty around
the UK car industry at present. It now a matter of urgency that
Jaguar Land Rover's application to the government's Automotive
Assistance Programme is processed without further delay."
Jaguar is seeking to lose 300 jobs at Halewood through voluntary
redundancies. Earlier this year, Unite brokered a deal with
the company which would see no compulsory redundancies at any of
Jaguar's UK sites.
