Capita's show of support for apprenticeships smacks of hypocrisy
31st August 2009
Unite members at Glasgow's St Vincent Street offices of Capita
Life and Pensions have denounced the company’s use of Scotland’s
modern apprenticeship scheme as "smacking of hypocrisy".
Unite is accusing the company of using taxpayers' money to fund
jobs on the cheap when 200 jobs have already been offshored this
year to Mumbai and a further 200 are set to go.
Unite, the UK’s biggest finance union, has learned that Capita
Learning and Development has recently submitted a bid for funding
from Scottish Skills Development to deliver apprenticeships.
Alex Salmond, the Scottish first minister, has been invited by
the company to take a tour of the Capita offices and launch
Scotland’s support to modern apprenticeships, particularly within
financial services.
Rob MacGregor, Unite national officer, said: “From Unite’s point
of view this smacks of hypocrisy. Capita Life and Pensions is
aggressively cutting jobs by off shoring and other means.
“There are currently around 300 people in the St Vincent Street
office at risk of redundancy where hundreds of jobs have already
gone.
“Capita are simply using taxpayers' money, in the form of modern
apprenticeships, to subsidise staff costs while making other staff
redundant.”
