BA cabin crew case fast tracks to High Court as ballot looms

5th November 2009

Unite vowed that the industrial action ballot of British Airway's 14,000 cabin crew, to stop sweeping changes to crew compliment and working schedules, will go ahead.

This follows a High Court ruling today (Thursday) that BA's attempts to force through contractual changes without agreement must be scrutinised by a full trial.

The cabin crew, represented by their union Unite, will now have their case fast-tracked to a full hearing by a senior judge in a trial beginning on February 1st, 2010.

Unite says today BA conceded it has a serious issue to answer in relation to the alleged breach of its members' contracts.

The union added that if the High Court rules on February 1st that the contracts have been broken, crew will be entitled to considerable compensation and that crew levels may have to return to the compliment agreed with the union, and which the company is seeking to sweep away on November 16th.

Lord Justice Butterfield presided over today's proceedings.
