20,000 Plymouth people say no to bus sell-off
28th July 2009
Unite, the UK’s biggest union, is to appeal to Plymouth
councillors to think again over their plans to sell off popular
local bus company, CityBus.
Drivers from the company, who are Unite members, will
demonstrate outside Plymouth City council offices on Monday 3rd
August from12 noon. The demonstration will take place
immediately before a full council meeting takes place in the
chambers.
Councillors will then be given a 20,000 strong petition from the
people of Plymouth who say they do not want the council to
privatise their bus service.
Clayton Roberts, Unite regional officer, said: “Democratically
elected members of the council cannot ignore the call from the
people of Plymouth and Unite any longer.
“The public petition makes it perfectly clear that the
tax-paying people of this city want CityBus to stay in public
hands. Only this will ensure that the continuation of the
services it provides at present stays intact.”
CityBus, covering all of Plymouth and Saltash, has been run
successfully on a commercial basis for the last 25 years with no
other financial help. Over 400 members, including drivers,
maintenance workers and general bus workers along with many members
of the public are all set to be affected by the sell-off
