‘All we want is dignity and respect’, say lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender workers
27th February 2009
Unite the union’s lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender (LGBT)
workers ‘Have Your Say’ survey results have been
announced.
Unite asked LGBT people to tell the union what their number one
issue for change in the workplace was. Their top priority issue was
to have ‘dignity and respect at work’.
Collette Cork-Hurst, national secretary for equalities, said:
"It’s not too much to ask, LGBT people deserve fair treatment just
like everybody else. We have to take this issue seriously and
continue our union campaign for our LGBT members to achieve
equality at work and in society."
Unite LGBT members believe that to eliminate homophobia and
tackle unfair treatment, trade unions must use education to raise
awareness on these issues.
Betty Gallacher, chair of the national LGBT committee, said: "On
a positive note, we have moved on and legislation has progressed to
stamp out discrimination and hatred and to promote respect at
work.
"We have to educate workers, parents, children and young people
if we want to get real equality in the workplace. We are valuable
members of our communities and no different to anyone else, we just
love differently."
