Commenting on the announcement by chancellor George Osborne that there will be a new seven day wait before jobseekers can claim benefits, Unite executive director for policy Steve Turner said: "George Osborne just can't help himself. The delay in people who lose their jobs getting the benefits to which they are entitled is yet another hateful attack on those at their lowest point from a cruel and miserable government.
“This is punishing people and their families who were in work and then lost their job, usually through no fault of their own. It will shove people into severe hardship and for what reason? So that he can look tough by pushing around vulnerable people.
“The 2,000 people laid off by Direct Line today and thousands like them have just had their lives made a whole load tougher thanks to this spiteful move by a spiteful chancellor."
