Unite, Britain's biggest union, has welcomed today's announcement (19 December) that Nissan's premium car brand Infiniti will begin manufacturing vehicles in the UK at Nissan’s Sunderland facility from 2015.
This means an investment of around £250 million into the Sunderland plant and will secure 1,000 jobs.
Unite national officer Tony Murphy said: "This is great news for Nissan's workforce and for the local economy in Sunderland, particularly during such difficult times. The decision to build the first premium product in the north east is a massive vote of confidence in the skills and expertise of the workforce.
"Britain is now a major hub for motor manufacturing excellence. Investing in the UK motor industry and working positively with the union does create wealth. We hope other motor and components companies follow suit."
