Unite statement on the sad death of Jim Dobbin MP, a proud trade union member

07 September 2014

Offering condolences on behalf of Unite and its members to the family and friends of Jim Dobbin MP on the sad news of his sudden death today (Sunday 7 September), general secretary Len McCluskey said:

"Jim was a true friend to and defender of working people, dedicated to serving the cause of social justice.

"For over fifty years, Jim was a proud union member.  He was a former officer of the Unite group in parliament, and was to his core a champion of trade unions and working people. He vigorously opposed the austerity doctrine because he understood, rightly, that it would only bring inequality and misery to ordinary people.

"Before entering parliament he worked for the NHS for over thirty years which is why he took with him to the Commons his passionate love for our NHS and fought ceaslessly to save it from this government's attacks.

"The people of Heywood and Middleton have lost a staunch ally, and the nation has lost a man determined to further social justice.  Our movement has lost a very dear friend."
