Unite statement on Mount Vernon Hospital, Barnsley

22 February 2017

Unite lead officer for health in Yorkshire Terry Cunliffe said: “Unite is calling for clarity on the future of the Mount Vernon Hospital in Barnsley as a matter of urgency.

“South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust needs to come clean on its plans for the site. The patients, staff and people of Barnsley deserve to know what is on the cards for this much-valued institution.

“While the site might be earmarked for housing, it is Unite’s experience that when such plots are sold off it is for executive-style housing far beyond the price range of working people and those keen to get on the housing ladder.

“Unite deplores any hospital closure and the resulting fragmentation of services. We are particularly concerned for the jobs of the dedicated and hardworking staff, and how they may be affected by any proposed closure.

“Unite is calling for the fullest debate across South Yorkshire about the future status of Mount Vernon, before any irrevocable decisions are made.”
