Unite on Trident jobs at Faslane and Coulport

Unite statement on Trident jobs at Faslane and Coulport

02 November 2015

Unite the union's policy is abundantly clear on the matter of Trident.  Defending the jobs and communities of our members in defence is our priority.

This commitment was reflected in the policy passed at Scottish Labour conference which stated that: ‘Prior to any decision to cancel Trident, firm commitments must be made to trade unions representing defence workers on the retention of defence workers jobs and that until they receive firm commitments to this end trade unions will continue to support the continuity of employment of their members.’

This is entirely consistent with long-standing Unite policy, and will ensure that our members' livelihoods are protected.  We urge that the full intention of this policy is reflected upon and correctly represented to avoid its misinterpretation causing unnecessary concern for this workforce.

Lastly, and for the avoidance of further doubt, at the UK Labour party conference in Brighton this year, it was the party members who decided on their priorities for debate. They chose not to make Trident an issue for debate. This was a constituency members' decision, nothing to do with Unite, and to suggest otherwise is simply wrong.
