Britain and Ireland’s largest union, Unite, confirmed today (Monday 4 March) that there will be an election for the position of general secretary of the union.
Two candidates have declared themselves to be standing for election, Jerry Hicks and Len McCluskey.
Nominations by Unite branches and workplaces closed last week and have now been validated to confirm:
- 136 nominations for Jerry Hicks (118 branches; 18 workplaces)
- 1,089 nominations for Len McCluskey (926 branches; 163 workplaces)
A full list of all nominating branches and workplaces and the candidates' election statements will be available on the Unite website later this week.
Voting papers will be dispatched to the 1.46 million members eligible to vote in the week commencing 18 March 2013 with the ballot closing on Friday, 12 April. The result will be declared on Monday, 15 April.
