Two of the top six UK bestselling cars in 2013, the Nissan Qashqai which sold 50,211, and the Vauxhall Astra which sold 68,070 were manufactured by Unite members in Sunderland and Ellesmere Port respectively.
UK car sales in 2013 recorded their best year since 2007 according to new figures from the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders). 2.26 million vehicles were registered in 2013, a 10.8 per cent rise on 2012.
Unite, Britain’s biggest union, says that the latest boost in car sales highlights the skills and expertise of workers in the British car industry which continues to grow from strength to strength.
Unite assistant general secretary, Tony Burke said: “Two of the top selling cars in the UK in 2013 were built by British manufacturing workers. Whether it’s a family car, a 4X4 or a luxury car, the UK is a world leader. That’s a big thumbs up for the skills and expertise of the men and women working in the car industry in this country.
“It’s also a reminder that the success of the UK car industry is a prime example of unions and employers working together to make a lasting and positive impact in the workplace.”
