The Labour shadow chancellor has sent a message of solidarity to TGI Fridays’ workers striking for the third time tomorrow (1 June), saying that ‘Labour stands for fair pay’ and that the strikers have 100 per cent of his support in their fight.
Workers at four TGI Fridays’ restaurants in Milton Keynes, the Trafford Centre Greater Manchester and London’s Piccadilly Circus and Covent Garden are staging their third 24 hour walk out tomorrow (1 June) as the dispute over tips and alleged minimum wage abuses hits the chain’s brand reputation.
A recent YouGov poll has revealed that the TGI Fridays brand’s impression score (whether someone has a positive impression of a brand) has taken a hit since February when reports of the company’s decision to take 40 per cent of waiters’ tips without consultation first hit the headlines.
Labour shadow chancellor, John McDonnell said: "Solidarity with TGI Fridays’ workers on strike against waiting staff tips being used to top up the wages of kitchen staff.
“This move sees the wages of already poorly paid waiting staff falling by up to £250 a month.
“Labour stands for fair pay and respect in the workplace. TGI Fridays’ workers from The Trafford Centre in Manchester, and those across the country, have my 100 per cent support in their fight."
Unite regional coordinator Andrena Clarke said: “Our members know that they are on the right side of this fight, but knowing that they have John McDonnell and the entire Labour party on their side is a huge boost.
“We are urging TGI Fridays to listen up and deliver up fair pay and fair tips. We won’t back down.”
