Unite, Britain’s biggest union, has called for guarantees of no job losses and for the protection of the UK’s research and development base in the event that Pfizer succeeds in its bid to take over UK-owned AstraZeneca.
US pharmaceutical company Pfizer is renewing its bid for the UK’s AstraZeneca, which would make for one of the biggest takeovers in the global drugs industry. News of the bid is likely to cause genuine concern amongst the 7,000 staff in the UK.
Unite national officer Linda McCulloch said: “News of the renewed bid for AstraZeneca by Pfizer will be very worrying for the UK workforce despite AstraZeneca holding out and urging its shareholders to ignore the bid.
“It is absolutely crucial that if Pfizer succeeds in its bid there must be guarantees of no jobs losses and for the protection on the UK’s research and development base. AstraZeneca is strategically significant for the UK economy. We expect the UK government to pay special attention to this bid and do everything possible to protect jobs and to support the UK’s knowledge base.”
